THE FIVE POINTS OF YOGA
Yoga is a holistic approach to maintaining a healthy body and mind. It works by addressing all of our needs, exercise, relaxation, breathing, diet and meditation.
Exercise - The physical postures of yoga aim to bring our bodies into balance. By correcting alignment, improving flexibility and strengthening our bodies, we become much more resilient to the effects of daily wear and tear, including aging.
Relaxation - Our bodies need rest, and not just any kind of rest, they need proper relaxation. Taking the time to consciously let the muscles, and the mind relax affords them the time to recharge. If we dont make relaxation a regular part of our lives we will quickly end up over worked, over stressed, tired, and even sick.
Breathing - We can survive without food for longer than 30 days, and without water for about 3 days, but how long can you last without breath? Breathing is directly tied to the state of our mind and body. What happens to your breath when you get into a stressful situation? It becomes short and shallow ? which doesnt supply the body with what it needs. The breathing techniques in yoga help us to better sustain ourselves in all situations.
Diet - Yoga is an all-encompassing science of health, and thus it is of importance what food we put into our bodies. By practising all of the above, we develop a more intuitive sense of what food makes us feel good and what doesnt, making our eating choices much easier.
Meditation - Concentration is something we all wished we had more of. Through the practice of meditation we calm the mind freeing ourselves from the loop of thoughts that run through our heads from day to day. Clearing our minds helps us to become more present and capable to handle and enjoy life from moment to moment.
